

Using a version control system is an absolute must for a developer of a project above a few hundred lines of code, and even more so for projects involving the collaboration of several developers. Using a good version control system is certainly better than the ad-hoc methods some developers use to maintain various revisions of their code.

It is a tool that enables developers to keep historical versions of the files under development and to retrieve past versions. It stores version information for every file (and the entire project structure) in an integrated database.

04. Main window
this is the main window of the program. As you can see in the left side of this explorer you will see all the projects and subprojects created. On the right side you will have all the files including in every branch of the projects and subprojects. Above the projects side you can see a toolbar with different buttons that will let you work with the projects (create, edit, eliminate, and so on). In the same way in the right side of the window above of the project’s files you also have a toolbar with all the available options to work with them. At the bottom of the projects and files you can see the Process information zone where you can see the results of your TDC commands.
05. Check out
To make changes to a file you must first check it out of the TDC database. When you Check Out an item, TDC places a writable copy in your working folder. A file that is checked out cannot be checked out by anyone else. You can check out one file, multiple files, or all files in a project depending on what item(s) you have selected when you perform the Check out operation.
06. Check in
You have to check in a modified file so that others users can work on it later. At the moment to check in a file you will be able to add a comment for instance to register the changes made on this file, then the rest of the users will be able to see this comment. You can also write a comment to publish, this information can be viewed for example for your customers.
07. User properties
In this window you can see all the properties that can be set for every user. As you see every user can be “Supervisor”, so in this way this kind of users will have more rights than the rest of the user, and will be able to do much more things in the system. Here you can also assign to every user a “Security profile”.
10. File properties
in this window you can see all the properties of every file as which user created the file and when, the size and which other files are linked to it. One important function on TDC it is called ”Link files”. With this function you can link files together and in that way you can ensure that when you check out or check in one file the rest of the files Linked to this one will be also checked out and in on the same step.
14. Contextual menu
Some of the actions that you can do with a file is to add a new one, delete an existing file, to check out, to check in, to see its properties, to view its content, to get its last version or watch its history and so on. All those actions can be reached by using the popup menu accessible just with the right click of the mouse over the selected file.
15. Get last version
The Get Latest Version command retrieves the most recent version of a file, a group of files, or an entire project from TDC and creates read-only copies for viewing or compiling in your working folder. You can choose a different working folder for the current Get operation by typing a new path in the Get Latest Version dialog box or selecting a new folder.
